Farm Power and Machinery (AGE 33202)

This course provides third-year students in different Bachelor of Science programmes at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources with a comprehensive understanding of energy and power systems used in agriculture, as well as the selection, operation, and management of farm machinery.

The course introduces the concept and importance of farm mechanization, highlighting its role in improving agricultural productivity, efficiency, and sustainability. Students will explore various sources of farm power, including human, animal, mechanical, and renewable energy systems, and examine their operating principles, performance characteristics, and practical applications.

In addition, the course covers a wide range of agricultural field machinery used in operations such as tillage, planting, irrigation, crop protection, and harvesting. Emphasis is placed on functional processes, calibration, and performance evaluation of equipment. Post-harvest machinery, material handling systems, and transport equipment are also discussed to provide a complete understanding of the agricultural production chain.

The course further equips students with skills in machinery management, including cost analysis, selection, maintenance, and replacement strategies. Safety considerations and efficient utilization of machinery are emphasized throughout.

By the end of the course, students will be able to select appropriate power sources and machinery for specific agricultural operations, evaluate their performance, and apply engineering principles to enhance mechanization in both smallholder and commercial farming systems.
