Course Overview
This course is specially designed for those of you who will be qualified to participate in reform processes and holding positions that will give them a mandate to conduct a process of change. After going through this course, you are expected to be conversant with strengthening the capacity of the national social protection system to work more effectively. The overall aim of this module is to give you the capacity for long-term and sustainable contribution to a more inclusive and equal society by improving the function of the social protection systems that tackle poverty, vulnerability, inequality (both gender and economic), and exclusion while strengthening the delivery of inclusive social development, productive employment, and equitable economic growth.
Aim of the course
- The objective of this course is to increase your knowledge and provide students with the capacity to implement development projects that have been prioritised with a social protection perspective in mind.
- To enable you to explain the meaning and benefits of social protection and its role in the Sustainable Development Agenda
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- discuss key examples of global trends and good practices from countries in extending social protection.
- explain practical tools to assess and implement social protection programs at the country and global levels
- juxtapose and use the right methodologies to target vulnerable groups
- describe public policy and social supports in Malawian context
UNITS

Unit 1 Basics of Social Protection
Take note that Unit 1 introduces you to the fundamental concepts and principles of social protection. It covers the essential components and objectives of social protection, including its role in reducing poverty, inequality, and vulnerability.
Unit 2: Social Protection and the 2030 Agenda
In unit 2, you will learn the relationship between social protection and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It delves into the specific targets and goals outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that relate to social protection.
Unit 3: Global Trends and Good Practices in Extending Social Protection
Take note that in Unit 3, we will focus on global trends and best practices in extending social protection. It provides an overview of different models and approaches to social protection systems from around the world.
Unit 4: Designing and Implementing Social Protection Systems
Unit 4 explores the process of designing and implementing social protection systems. It covers the key steps involved in formulating a social protection strategy, including assessing needs, setting objectives, and identifying target populations.
Unit 5: Public Policy and Social Supports in Malawi
In this unit, you will learn about how social policy is concerned with the ways societies meet human needs for security, education, work, health, and wellbeing in the Malawian context.
